Case Study – Replacement Of Banisters And Spindles Using Metal Spindles And Other Tasks

Mrs G of Preston called us in to undertake a number of jobs including the replacement of banisters and spindles on her stairs. Additionally we were asked to hang two doors, fit a pair of French doors leading to an extension and install laminate flooring in an entrance of her house. So, I’m sure you can get a flavour of the variety of tasks we were charged with!

Firstly we took up the old laminate flooring and also the skirting boards. This gave us a clean and open space to start our laying of the laminate floor. We put down the underlay which fitted perfectly and was a necessary requirement as a solid foundation for the installation of the flooring that was to follow. The flooring that the customer had chosen was the Concertino Kolberg oak effect that we supplied and delivered. The laying of the laminate flooring took a full day. We had two door casing to cut out and also the base of the staircase which is a time consuming process if you want to do the job properly.

The next morning we turned up to Preston early to get a full day’s work in to complete as much of the task as possible. As there was 3 of us on site we all took a door each which needed fitting to size. This involved plaining the door both top and bottom so as to get the fit exactly right. We were then able to rebate the hinges on the doors. The doors were then hung and fitted perfectly. Finally the latches and handles were fitted and the doors were ready to be used.

At Last We Get To The Banisters And Spindles

We saved the biggest job till last which was the removing the old banisters and spindles so is was ready for a new modern look with metal spindles. After removing the old banister we had to sand down all of the existing newels and bases as the customer wanted them to be stained. We then measured out for the banister and cut it to the correct length. We also had to cut to the correct angles so it would sit correctly. We then measure the distances for the spindles, cut them all individually and fixed them evenly up the stairs. The customer was very happy with all the work that we had completed for her, but was over the moon with the transformation of her staircase giving the entrance to the house a massive facelift. The replacement of banisters and spindles really gave the entrance hallway to her house a new modern feel. Another very happy customer.
